DetailsThe ragouminier, also called the Nanking cherry (Prunus tomentosa), is a species of cherry native to North and West China, Tibet, Korea, Mongolia, and North India.
The ragouminier (term of Algonquin origin) is sometimes also called "ragoumier", "Canadian cherry", "dwarf cherry of Canada", "minel of Canada" or "Nankin cherry".
The ragouminier is an irregularly shaped shrub that can measure up to 4 m high and wide.
The bark is hairless and coppery black.
The deciduous leaves are alternate, 2-7 cm long and 1-3.5 cm wide, oval to obovate, acuminate with an irregular serrated margin, rough, dark green, pubescent above and tomentose below, with nectar-bearing petioles .
The flowers, about 1.5-2 cm in diameter, are white or pink in a scarlet calyx, opening with or before the leaves in spring. Very numerous, they are arranged in clusters on scarlet pedicels.
The fruit is a sweet cherry but a little harsh, bright red, ripe in early summer. It measures 5-12 mm (rarely 25 mm) in diameter -
